March on the Isle of Skye

3 March 2016 . . . . A walk in Coille Gaireallach near Broadford produced a nice collection of lichens as well as a couple of liverworts.

6 March 2016 . . . . Concentrating on lichens again today, this time at Tokavaig.
Lichens reproduce both sexually and vegetatively.

In foliose lichens, sexual reproduction results in spore-producing 'apothecia' (the orange/brown discs).

Vegetative reproduction involves the production of either 'isidia' (tiny nodules) or 'soredia' (coarse granules) along ridges on the surface and on the margins of the 'thallus'. When these become detached they are carried by the wind and will give rise to a new thallus if they fall on to a suitable substrate.
